Have you ever wondered how certain people discover the zillion things we have to memorize at school?
They are special people. They are researchers, and they think and act differently than regular people. They observe a phenomenon for some time and then draw conclusions. They add parts to a gadget. They take parts off a gadget. Their goal is usually the same—to discover something new. Would you like to be one of them? What you have to do is to follow the process below.
Wonder
It all beings with a sense of feeling something is off, unbalanced, missing. The teacher is a bit cranky today. My classmate is drinking way too much soda. The sidewalk is dangerously rugose for disabled pedestrians. Most residents in Managua rarely make it out of poverty. I don´t have as many friends as Xavier. I would like to plant celery at home but I can´t find seeds in the market.
Once the emotions are kicking in, it is time to ask questions that can be answered. Why is this happening? How can people change their status? What can I make this differently? What can I add to or take out of this to make it better? To answer those questions, you move on to the next stage.
Inquire
Now you find professionals that can answer the questions for your topic. A psychologist can help you understand crankiness. A journal or a book on psychology has plenty of reliable information about thetopic. Reading reports about a population succeeding economically can help you see what others groups are doing or not successfully. Making happy faces to others can get your closer to more acquaintances.
If are willing to do hard-science experiments, consult with a technician. You can also watch videos on line. Imagine you want to make pineapple vinegar with a PH of 4. You need to wait for a month at least for it to ferment under certain conditions. Then measure it with a PH ribbon. During the process of inquiry, you have to follow safety procedures to avoid accidents or conflicts. Also you need to take plenty of notes. Otherwise you will not be able to prove to others that it is your study.
Conclude
With the notes, draw useful conclusions. Start answering the initial question. Then mention the causes of the problem. Then narrate what you did during each stage. Describe what went right and what went wrong. Finally, recommend others to make changes in their ways of thinking or acting. Also tell them what else can be done to find better answers to the problem.
Publish
If you have discovered something new, it is fair for others to know about it. You are a member of the club of finders. Others before you left their discoveries for you to enjoy. It is your turn now. You have many options. Write a report. Compose an essay. Make a video. Do a presentation. Remember, if your solution or conclusions quenched your curiosity, others will do so too.
